Europe's Readiness for E-government (Kable)

Global Internet Liberty Campaign releases letter opposing Cyber-Crime Convention (Press Release)
Twenty-eight GILC member organizations from around the world have urged the Council of Europe to reject the current version of its Convention on Cyber-Crime. The letter from the organizations states that provisions of the treaty runs contrary to internationally accepted human rights norms and would infringe on the free speech and privacy rights of all Internet users.
Web crime agency mooted(FT)
A global internet security agency to fight cyber crime and protect data privacy will be discussed at a meeting of international policymakers and industry. In a speech to delegates at the World E-commerce Forum in London, Risaburo Nezo, head of the OECD's Science, Technology and Industry directorate, will warn of sharp rises in reported security breaches in the US and Japan.

The Anti-Defamation League has devised an online guide to hate symbols, logos and tattoos to help parents and teachers identify warning signs in their communities.
Porn, Big Brother Are Good to Surfcontrol (Reuters)
Surfcontrol became the highest gainer among the country's 350 top companies after it reported healthy revenues from its filtering software, which helps firms block employees' access to porn, gambling and other vices or distractions on the Net.
E-Tailers Fuming Over N.Y. Law (Wired)
A new New York State law prohibits the sale or shipment of cigarettes to individual Internet customers. The law - which also prohibits mail order and telephone sales of cigarettes and goes into effect January 2001 - was passed earlier this year by state legislators, who said it was needed to protect public health and the state economy.
