His Holiness John Paul II will make a pastoral visit to Ukraine from June 23-27, 2001, at the invitation of the President of Ukraine and the Bishops of both the Greek Catholic and Roman Catholic Churches.
The principal sites of the visit will be Kyiv, the national capital, and Lviv, the seat of both the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church.
Ukraine is geographically the 2nd largest country in Europe, with a population of 49 million people of different religions.
During his visit, the Pope will recognize the sufferings of the past century by beatifying several martyrs for the Christian faith.
