UGCC Synod Announces the Creation of Two New Exarchates for Ukraine

Lviv, Ukraine, 6 July 2001: His Beatitude Lubomyr Cardinal Husar, Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church announced that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Synod of Bishops created two new Exarchates (Administrative Regions) for Eastern Ukraine. The additional two new Exarchates will be named: Donetz and Odessa-Crimea. The two new Exarchates were created from the territory of the Kyiv-Vyshhorod Exarchate, created in 1996. Read More...

Russian Patriarch Alexis II Also Planning to Visit Ukraine

Alexis II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, intends to visit Kyiv for the celebration of the 950th anniversary of Kyiv’s Monastery of the Caves on 28 August of this year. Victor Chermomyrdin, Russian ambassador to Ukraine, made the announcement on 16 July during a meeting with Oleksandr Omelchenko, mayor of Kyiv.

Lithuania: Lutherans and Municipality to Appeal Property Confiscation

More than a week after a court decision upholding the confiscation of four church-owned properties, the Evangelical Lutheran parish in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius is still awaiting an official copy of the ruling, the pastor's wife Vilma Sabutis told Keston News Service from Vilnius on 10 July. National Deputies Warn Constantinople Not to Interfere; UOC-KP Responds
One hundred and twenty-five national deputies of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament) signed a statement addressed to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, warning it not to interfere in the internal life of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) are also criticized in the letter which was publicized on 13 July. UAOC and UOC-KP Priests May Celebrate Liturgy Together

On 10 July 2001 delegates of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) at a meeting in Kyiv signed a joint statement announcing that priests of the two Churches may celebrate the eucharistic liturgy together. Odessa Metropolitan Ahafanhel to Represent Moscow Patriarchate in ZurichOn 9 July 2001 in Kyiv the Hierarchical Sobor (Council) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) selected Metropolitan Ahafanhel of Odessa and Izmail to represent the Church at an upcoming meeting. The major Ukrainian Orthodox jurisdictions are to gather in Switzerland later in July to discuss Church union. The Patriarchate of Constantinople will send representatives and the Russian Orthodox Church is also expected to participate. Read More...

The Pope May Return to Ukraine
The Pope May Return to UkraineAt a press conference held on 9 July 2001, Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, apostolic nuncio in Ukraine (pictured at right), stated that His Holiness Pope John Paul II might again visit Ukraine. Eterovic said that the Pope’s words of farewell before his return flight, “Do pobachennia, Ukraino!”(“Until we see each other again, Ukraine!”), may suggest such a desire on the Pope’s part. Orthodox Brotherhood in Donetsk Denied Registration
(Evgenia Mussuri, Keston News Service: 11.00, 9 July 2001) Since 1997, the Orthodox Brotherhood of All Saints in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk has battled unsuccessfully to register with the authorities. The Brotherhood's leader, Aleksey Ilyin, told Keston News Service that the authorities have never given any sound explanation for the refusals, but he is certain the reason lies in politics. The head of Donetsk's Department for Religious Affairs, one of the state agencies to have rejected the registration application, told Keston that the 26-year-old Ilyin is `too young' to lead such a group, that the Brotherhood's members do not know any prayers and that it cannot be registered independently of any of the three Orthodox jurisdictions in Ukraine.
